6th Grade Time Travelers Book Club
Come and travel with us through time! Our first book is The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare.  Pick up the book in the library and join us for a discussion and snacks. This book takes place in what is now Israel and you get to meet bandits, Roman citizens and teens like you that are trying to make sense of their lives.

"When I first received the book in my grade eight class, I thought, oh man, another book that will have no affect on me whatsover, etc etc. I was wrong. Though it took quite a few chapters to find out what the bronze bow was, I definitely feel that it's one of the best books I've read. The author, Elizabeth George Speare, portrayed the characters, especially Daniel, very, very well. I couldn't put the book down! Soon it didn't become just a reading homework assignment. While reviewing the book and making up questions, I found it very interesting, the way love was shown."--student review

8th Grade Time Travelers Book Club
Come to the 8th grade book club. We are starting with a book called The River Between Us by Richard Peck.  Although I do not read many books about the Civil war, this was a good one with surprising twists and turns.

"This historical novel set at the beginning of the Civil War actually opens in 1916, as 15-year-old Howard Leland Hutchings recounts his trip in a Model T to visit his father's childhood home in Grand Tower, IL. When he and his younger brothers meet the four elderly people who raised their father, the novel shifts to 1861, and the narrator shifts to 15-year-old Tilly Pruitt, the boys' grandmother. When a steamboat from New Orleans brings two mysterious young ladies, Mama offers them room and board, and the Pruitts' lives are forever changed."  Amazon Review

The Lightening Thief- Second Breakfast Book Club
Read Lightening Thief by Rick Riordin, then attend our Breakfast Book Club  on January 12th, 2010 to enjoy a discussion and food! What's the book about?

What if the gods of Olympus were alive in the 21st Century? What if they still fell in love with mortals and had children who might become great heroes -- like Theseus, Jason and Hercules?

What if you were one of those children?

Such is the discovery that launches twelve-year-old Percy Jackson on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction – Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.

In addition, it is the first in a series of books. It has won many awards, some of which are listed below.  Hope to see you for breakfast !

Reading Opportunities
AR-Accelerated Reader is an optional program at Cedar Bluff Middle School. Students read books of their choice and gain points by answering questions on the computer.  The top three readers this year will each choose a favorite book to add to the library collection with their name and date inside the cover. Anyone earning 30 points any quarter is allowed to participate in the library sponsored activities (Movies related to books, or Gaming opportunities.)

ZINGO- This is a new opportunity for students to read at least 9 books across a variety of genres throughout the year.  As a book is finished there many different ways to respond (like podcasts, poetry, list 5 interesting things learned, make a model, create a piece of music). These responses will be displayed on the website and in our hallways. Each quarter, students that read at least two books are invited to attend the library sponsored activities (see above.)
